January 6, 2007 Here it is the 12th day of Christmas and I'm still waiting. I'm still waiting for my Christmas plant to bloom. Perhaps I planted it later than I should have. I bought a kit for the plant around Thanksgiving time. The kit included everything I needed to do the planting – a pot, a tray, the growing material – and of course the plant itself. All I needed to do was to assemble the materials (per the instructions) and provide the proper environment for the plant's growth. I needed to find a warm place with sunlight for the plant and to keep the growing medium moist. Have you figured out what my Christmas plant is? No, it's not a poinsettia. It's an amaryllis. Here's what one looks like when in full bloom. Quite beautiful, isn't it?
This flower develops from a bulb. The bulb itself is not very attractive. You certainly wouldn't set it out on the table for viewing. However, locked deep within the bulb, is all the plant's beautiful potential. That potential remains hidden until it is unlocked by something it can't provide for itself. Someone needs to provide the bulb with the proper growing medium, with a warm place, with water and with sunlight. A new year has begun! Beautiful possibilities exist for you and for your loved ones. These potentials are locked deep within your heart and the hearts of those entrusted to your care, by choice or chance, whether they be a spouse, children, family members, co-workers, employees. It is your charge to create an environment that will draw out from darkness and into the light, the inner beauty of each heart you meet so that it can be seen and blessed by all. That environment may not necessarily be a physical one. More than anything it is the spirit you project as you make your way through this life. As this 2007 begins, may you resolve to live in love, joy, peace, patience, gentleness, goodness, faith, kindness and self-control. (Galatians 5:22). There is no telling what beauty and goodness you may unleash!
Beloved, we are God's children now;
